The Grand Galvez is beautiful. Check in staff were fantastic and friendly. This is a great place for an event or couple. Although kids are welcome, it’s not very kid friendly. Our Deluxe 2 double bed room was tiny. The beds are very comfortable. The shower system would be awesome if there was more pressure. The water trickled out of each of the different heads. The coffee maker in the room makes awful coffee. The view was beautiful from the 5th floor. We couldn’t understand why there were zero places to wash the sand off. We found a garden hose and used that. But come on!!! You’re a beach resort. The lobby bathrooms say no bathing and not to rinse the sand off. At breakfast in the restaurant downstairs we asked for a bowl of fruit. The waiter said they didn’t have any. But while at the pool, we ordered lunch and asked if they had fruit since it was on the menu and she said, “oh yeah of course” like we were silly did asking. I told her about breakfast and she said well that’s stupid. Beware, the fruit platter at the pool is delicious but huge. All that said, we’re glad we stayed there and would recommend it for couples or an event.

Beautiful property rich with history. Easy access to the seawall for strolling. Short walk to Pleasure Pier if you’re traveling with children or for those looking for a fun date night to be kids again.

Beautiful beach front historical hotel that is truly one of a kind. I was one who remembers when this gem went into disrepair. Thank God she is back better than ever. And the Christmas decorations the kids love! Great all around.

The hotel itself is very nice, clean, and quiet. The pool is small and there were a lot of kids splashing around but it was still a good time. The pool bar did close pretty early in the evening. Room service was good, there aren’t many close options for dinner after 9pm on a Thursday. Would stay again.

We had reserved a room with two beds since we were staying with our three small children. Check in started at 3pm. We did not arrive until around 5-6pm and upon check-in, we were advised that a room was not available yet and we would have a 30 minute wait. That was a bit frustrating to hear after traveling for 8 hours, but they were kind and gave us a pool key to take our kids swimming while we waited.
When they called us to advise us that our room was ready, we went up to find that they have given us a room with only one bed. I went down to advise them it was wrong and get a new key. They apologized and assigned us a new room. When we got to the new room, we found that it ALSO only had one bed. My partner was now frustrated and went down to discuss it. The manager then stepped in and advised us that they were doing renovations and some rooms had been changed, but that she would go inspect the available rooms herself to make sure we had two beds this time. That was very kind of her and we were finally able to make it into a room with two beds after that.
Everything was within walking distance- the beach, several restaurants, and even Pleasure Pier! The only negative review I have to give would be how ridiculously small the mini-fridges are and the fact that none of the rooms have a microwave. The mini fridges are so small that you can only fit 3 normal sized bottles of water in there and NOTHING ELSE. No room for a takeout box or a bottle of wine. And it's barely even cold..

My stay did not live up to my expectations. It started off great with a check in with Claire. Unfortunately this was the last professional staffer of our short stay. We were woken up from an afternoon nap by 3 housekeepers were arguing in the hallway outside our room. When I asked them to tone it down, they appeared angry with me. The bar was loud with a large group of college age kids. The drinks were excellent, but required standing at the bar for 20 min for the one bartender to make two drinks. The Monarch restaurant was also disappointing. No oysters or our favorite Malbec. Really, no oysters in Galveston? To wrap up the day, we were disappointed that there was no turn down service and came back to an unmade bed and dirty towels. Our neighbors moved roomed due to their room not being clean. Bottom line,,, not at all what I expected at this price point for a hotel with such a rich heritage and potential.

On a whim, we decided to book rooms here with our adult children for an overnight. The ambience is fabulous, bar area comfortable, though what’s with the ruby red chandelier? Felt like I was in a brothel. The only real issues we had were in the shower, after soaking my head, the shampoo would not pump. Had to grab my own from my overnight bag. Daughter had two shampoos and no body wash in their shower, and front desk just shrugged instead of making a note. Lastly, the restaurant was pretty slow on Sunday morning. We waited about forty minutes to get our food. It was delicious once it came. They were setting up for brunch, so guess everyone was busy with it. I would stil come back though!

Overall our stay at the Galvez was okay. The hotel is old, but they have done a good job keeping it current. The rooms recently underwent a renovation but missed the mark on a few items - the furniture isn't comfortable, and the bathroom has only a shower with very slippery floors. During our stay the AC went out twice, once because of a storm, and then again due to a completely separate issue. The staff did their best to accommodate us, but no AC in the summer is bad. There are no umbrellas at the pool, so very little shade if you need it. Pool service was challenging due to the power issues, but they did their best. Also, minimal food options were available inside the hotel, so we found ourselves having to venture out a lot.
Location: If you want to stay near the seawall and pier, then the location is great. You can walk to many places along the seawall. There is a trolly that runs down the seawall and to the strand, but timeframes are limited.
Service / Staff: Our check-in experience was amazing. Jan at the front desk was wonderful, as was Claire. They did everything they could to accommodate us and answer our questions. They even let us go check out some of the room options since we were traveling with our toddler. Housekeeping is limited due to staffing challenges, but we were able to get extra towels and items that we needed.

The hotel was beautiful and the location is great. However we were very disappointed to find out most things around and at the hotel aren’t open during the week. This was a spring break trip for our family and we arrived on a Sunday and left on a Friday morning. The coffee bar was only open once during our stay. The swim up bar and outside bar were never open. My husband tried to get drinks from the regular bar about 2pm one day as we were laying by the pool and learned that also doesn’t open until 3. He was sent into the restaurant and stood waiting for someone to help him for 10 minutes. He finally got someone to help him and she would only make one of the drinks he ordered and then he waited another 10 minutes before giving up and coming back to the pool empty handed. One evening we were able to get drinks at the bar to bring with us to the hot tub, we each ordered a mixed drink and it was $28 before tip! More expensive then Disney!!!
The beds are super comfy and the shower was amazing, however for a family the rooms are tiny!! We had no place to put our clothes away or even move our suitcases out of the way. We were left leaving our suitcases open on the floor and living out of those for the week. Twice during our stay the fire alarm went off, we gathered the kids and headed down the stairs which led us to an outside area of the hotel, only to go back in the lobby and every one there was acting as if everything was normal. No explanation for the disruption.
