Overview

The Coal Exchange Hotel is a beautiful, historic hotel in a fantastic location near Cardiff Bay. Families will love the spacious family rooms, which comfortably sleep four adults, and boast a luxurious jacuzzi bath. While some reviews mention the lack of air conditioning and potential warmth in the rooms, fans are provided. The breakfast, with its wide variety of choices, is a particular highlight, though some inconsistencies in cleanliness have been noted. The hotel's character and central location make it a memorable choice, but families should be aware of potential issues with room temperature and the need to check on room cleanliness.

A lovely, character-filled hotel that is full of charm and history reflectingbits interesting past We stayed in the family room which comfortably slept 4 adult size people. It was a bit warm in there, but they had helpfully provided fans to help The staff are friendly and helpful - good representatives of the hotel We would definitely stay there again if/when we next visit Cardiff

The Hotel was absolutely amazing for our 2 night stay with me my husband and 4 children. The family room was absolutely amazing, the tea and coffee facilities were amazing, especially the double spa bath!! Only tiny thing i could think of was not being able to connect my tv to a. Iphone as its easier done with a android. My son who is autistic keeps talking about the room number home he loved it that much. Staff were amazing. We barely drove but as its so central we walked everywhere. The breakfast ah!!! It was amazing the variety of choices my kids were doomed! Especially when they saw bread and chocolate spread. Will highly recommend, definitely paid the moneys worth! Ill definitely be back with more of my family 😊 Thank you 🙏

Very unique historic building, well located near Mermaid Quay. Room was large and comfortable and in good condition but could definitely be refreshed for a less dated feeling. No elevator on one side of the hotel but staff gave the option to use the other side. Fun family experience.

On arriving at the hotel we were delighted with the appearance of this beautiful old building and its entrance. Unfortunately, we were not made to feel welcome by the lady at the reception desk who only spoke to give us instructions and did not smile or appear happy and this was not a good start. When her colleague entered the reception area they then talked between themselves and to another guest with a baby whilst checking us in, which we found rude and unwelcoming. Our room and the hotel were beautiful, it was lovely to see how many original features it had. We were slightly disappointed with the fact the bedside table was not wiped over and was covered with sticky cup marks but overall the room was lovely and the bed comfortable. The bathroom was a delight with its huge jacuzzi tub and this was a definite highlight for us. However, there was mould on the tile grout, which could have very easily been removed with a quick spray of mould remover. At breakfast we were welcomed with a massive smile, a good morning and an amazing reception from the young lady at the restaurant. She really did make us feel welcome and put on a service with a smile. (If her employers are reading this, she was very slim, blonde hair tied back into a bun). She really deserves some recognition. The breakfast was amazing with loads of choice, again in beautiful historical surroundings and a bit of modern luxury. All in all, we had a lovely stay and I would recommend it.

There were 3 fans in the room because they knew the aircon wasn’t working, couldn’t open the window because there was no safety for the children despite it being a family room and it felt like the heating was on full blast - very uncomfortable night’s sleep.

A very impressive building, full of history. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Hotel decor is beautiful. Breakfast wasnt great, not much choice, dirty plates, inedible pastries. Staff in the breakfast room were really lovely though, which was only saving grace. Cardiff Bay is so close by, you would get better for your money just up the road in Wetherspoons! Room was beautifully decorated with a jacuzzi bath (we stayed in a king room) HOWEVER, do not book to stay on a warm day if you can help it. This is definitely a winter hotel. There is no air conditioning due to it being such an old building. We didnt think it would be an issue, until we attempted to sleep in probably the warmest room I have ever slept in. The fan placed in the room did little to cool the air. Window opened a crack and the fans built into the room did nothing. We found a used tea bag on the floor so wasnt checked thouroughly after last guest. Lastly, the area around the hotel is a little sketchy. If id have visited on my own or with children i wouldnt have felt safe coming back later in the evening with people hanging around on street drinking.
