Howard Johnson by Wyndham Portsmouth

I am writing in reference to our hotel stay from July 13-14. Our room was on the ground level and it was very muggy for the duration of our stay as it was raining out. There was condensation on the walls and furniture. Even the bedspread felt damp and the room had a very unpleasant odor. The water pressure was very low, there were water stains on the ceiling and paint was chipping off the bathroom wall. When we checked in, the front desk did not inform us of how to connect to WiFi, or when and where breakfast was. We were informed in the morning that it was a sold out night and typically the rooms on the ground floor were not reserved. Our stay at the Howard Johnson was extremely disappointing for my children and I. Due to our negative experience, I believe that it is justified in asking for a refund.

We have been staying here for about 10 years/6-7 times per year. We also bring friends and family. This year, starting the weekend after Thanksgiving we started having issues with our rm key not working. Then again in Dec and again this wknd. If this doesnt stop, we will stay elsewhere.

Ok, normally I am not a high rater of hotels, but have stayed in enough of them, especially the normally priced ones, to know what people expect. I would certainly state for this level of hotel, this HoJo was probably the best that I have experienced. It was remodeled well, even the outside parking landscape had some needed improvements. Although hotel amenities and breakfast was the expected minimal experience, the common areas and rooms were very retro modern upgraded. Everything seemed new, including plumbing, furniture, finishes, etc. Even loved the subtle retro style decor including old advertisements, colors, 1970's round mirrors, artwork, multi-sphere floor lamp, and perimeter lit bathroom vanity, see attached pictures. Don't get me wrong, this is no 5 star hotel full experience and everything is perfect, but for the little budge they probably had, they really hit the mark, without it looking cheesy. My wife and girls won't stay at the bottom end price point hotels anymore, so this was priced right for the area involving our family trip. Friendly staff and later breakfast/checkout hours was a welcome bonus for our overnight travels. Rare to submit a glowing review for a Howard Johnson, but this one deserved it.

Clean and comfortable. Good coffee at breakfast. The staff was wonderful, especially Robert. My kids adored him! Thank you for a wonderful stay.
