5 out of 5 stars

We stayed in this hotel on a whim during our first trip to Sault Ste. Marie. This was our third stay and we have no desire to stay anywhere else in SSM. This place certainly qualifies as "best bang for your buck." In addition to just being a very nice, well-kept hotel, here are some little things that set it above the rest. 1. Price. Very reasonable. The motel next door was only $20 less and I guarantee you would not get the comfort and amenities offered at this Best Western. 2. Breakfast. All three mornings that I have had breakfast at this hotel I have been impressed. Let me be clear, it is not a 5-star dining experience. I have been to hotels that have omelet bars and every breakfast item imaginable. Again, we are talking about best bang for your buck. They always have a large variety with tasty items. Strawberry waffle mix for the waffle iron??? Have never seen that anywhere else. 3. Fan in the bathroom. I know this sounds silly, but if you are with family and friends and dinner is coming back to haunt you, I appreciate a hotel bathroom with a fan that masks the sound effects. 4. Spacious rooms. The rooms seem a little bit bigger than most other standard hotel rooms. We never feel crammed in. 5. Other stuff: super nice staff, proximity to LSSU and Canada, plenty of shopping options, very clean. We didn't use the pool or conference room but they look very nice too.

When checking in there was a little dog (not a service animal) running around the lobby, the front desk assured us it was pet free except for service animals. They didnt say anything to the person, and it seemed they didnt care if people broke the rules. The dog was staying on the second floor after we were told service animals were on the first floor, i am allergic to dogs so its frustrating they have rules and dont abide by them. There was also someone smoking at the end of of the second floor hallway. We had a group of us, adults and children, and asked if we could use the breakfast room to eat our dinner, as we have done in the past, and was denied. They got stared at while we ate at the tables in the lobby. Rooms themselves were okay. The fridge was a very small mini fridge, the wallpaper above the shower was peeling and looked moldy. Breakfast was great! Lots of choices. They had a few waffle makers, sausage, eggs, canadian bacon, muffins, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, toast, pastries. Overall not a terrible stay but many ways to improve.

4 out of 5 stars

We stayed for a family trip over the Fourth of July and the hotel was nice but definitely understaffed. We learned after our room wasn’t cleaned the first day that we had to request a cleaning, however; the next day was the holiday and their wasn’t anyone working that day to clean. We were able to get clean towels without a problem but had a very sandy room. The kids loved the pool and sauna but they were not as clean as we would have liked. There were a lot of options for hot food at breakfast which is always nice and the staff did a great job of keeping it stocked. The hallways were incredibly dark to the point where I had to stand and let my eyes adjust to see the room numbers.
