The staff at the reception was friendly, the location is fantastic and the family room (with 5 beds) is rather cosy with large windows, but no so well equipped (basically just beds and a very small bathroom). The doors are very thin and you hear very much the people who are passing by in the staircase, especially in the middle of the night... We had no problem with that and we thought it was all part of the Amsterdam atmosphere. Unfortunately in the morning after the first night we found (and killed) 2 BED BUGS (including a very large one ) on 2 different beds, (they were definately bed bugs, they were even full of blood). As a result we packed our things and left only after one night (despite we had paid for 2 nights- the receptionist apologised for the inconvenience and he seemed genuinely sorry and surprised, However considering the size of the bed bug it must have been in the room for a while and must have fed in quite a few customers before us. So I hope the hotel management will take care of the problem and sanitize room 202 (family room with 5 beds on the second floor) before they rent it again !

The family room with 5 beds was a great deal for us. We loved the little balcony and its view. The beds were comfortable but left little room for suitcases. The bathroom was clean but tight on space, the light would go off automatically and and we would be in the dark while showering.

We didn’t have an air conditioner in our room which is at the top floor. We didn’t have a super hot weather but it was definitely uncomfortable during a day. They do have two fans which was nice but also quite noisy.
The best highlight of this hotel is people who work there. They are super ice and helpful.
The worst part of this hotel is their staircase. They are so narrow and I am not sure how it can even operate without any safety precautions. We had to throw our luggage downstairs one by one. Also climbing up the stairs are quite challenging for little kids and anyone who has ever leg injuries? Even if you don’t?
Overall the location was good.

My family of five stayed here last week. The room was a bit tight with all of our luggage but we made it work. The staff were so incredibly friendly and helpful with pointing out places for us to see. Our location to everything was great. It can get a little noisy at night but that’s to be expected with this location being on the corner of a busier street. We didn’t come here to get tons of rest, but to see the sights, and that we did! Enjoyed a nice little breakfast at the hotel in the morning which consisted of coffee, juice, tea, a board of fresh lunch meats, delicious rolls and hard boiled eggs. Was nice to grab drinks at the bar as well. There was some construction going on outside of our window but it wasn’t a big issue because we started our days early and the work ended by the time we came back. Yes, the hall stairs are a big challenge with luggage but I had my husband and 3 sons to carry all the luggage. I’ve been told most of the old buildings are like this so we expected it going in. I would definitely stay here again as we felt it was a fun little place and it met our needs. If you require a lift or a spacious room/bathroom, then you’ll need to check in at one of the upscale expensive places but we enjoyed staying here for the old iconic Amsterdam building experience.

The location was best thing about this property. Within 10 mins walk to Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, 15 mins to Ann Frank House, etc.
We stayed two nights and felt this was more than enough. Would not stay here again. Hotel itself very basic and rather run down. More of a backpackers' hostel for the price. However, positives: was warm, relatively clean and area felt safe. On negative side: lots of noise from outside throughout the night, despite us being on top floor. Beds rather too soft for my liking but this is personal preference. Worst aspect, however: the stairs - incredibly steep and narrow. This may well be the norm in these tall, slim Amsterdam townhouses but felt like we were taking our lives in our hands every time we went up, or worse still, came down them!
Absolutely would not recommend for elderly, for families or for anyone with anything more than hand luggage to carry up as there is NO LIFT!! Be warned...

We loved our stay at back stage we were on the 4th floor and the stairs are veery steep but we just laughed about it every time. We brought our 2 kids ages 10 and 12 and they really loved the hotel as well! If we are ever back in the city this will be the first hotel I look to try and get a room! Perfect location! Also very friendly staff!

A fun, funky hotel really convenient to the Leidseplein (many restaurants and nightlife), museums (Rijks, Van Gogh) and tram stops 1, 2 and 5 that go to the central train station. The staff are friendly and helpful. The breakfast spread has something for everyone. Overall very good. The only negatives are: 1) the stairs are very steep and narrow - trouble for any suitcase larger than a carry on, or for anyone with difficulty using stairs, and 2) the street noise can take getting used to - cars in the morning, people having a good time until late at night. While it's
true that many hotels and houses in central Amsterdam have narrow stairs, these will be tough for someone over 65 yrs old.
But... What other hotel has a mural of the Dali Lama in your room or snare drums mounted as lamp shades. Where else can you read about local bands or celebrities from the comments they've left on the walls in the reception / bar?
Our family of 5 had a great time in Amsterdam and a pleasant stay at the Backstage Hotel. It's exactly what it says it is.
