My family and I (2 adults, 3 kids) stayed at Balmoral recently. The hotel itself was good. Clean, friendly staff, rooms were comfortable enough, AC was great.
The cons: The parking garage is difficult but the staff definitely does their best to be quick and efficient getting your vehicle out for you.
-Food service is SLOW. Although, I believe that might just be a Costa Rica thing? We found that to be the case anywhere we ate. But seriously, make sure you have no less than an hour for any meal you eat there and that might be a generous time estimate.
Overall, this place was what we needed for two nights upon arrival and departure into and out of CR. MAKE SURE you give yourself lots of extra time to get to the airport. Even though on paper Balmoral isn't far from SJO, traffic is always a nightmare.

I like the hotel as a good location.
Plus the sofas and chairs on second floor are nice to relax in and visit with family.

I rented the beautiful two bedroom suite on the second floor (room 200) because we were staying with extended family. The room was nice, but we discovered that the tv in the living room and one room were not working along with the toilet in one of the bedrooms. The worker at the front desk was very understanding and sent someone right away. The very polite maintenance worker quickly came and repaired the t.v. in the living room. The other tv was not repairable and the toilet was more serious and was left for another day. The worker at the front desk was very willing to work with us.
The restaurant downstairs was very good and had great ambiance and provided opportunity to people watch. Since we were in the heart of downtown, we walked to shops, restaurants, grocery stores, museums and plays. We did have to get back before dark though.

The family suite was great for my family of 5. The breakfast was included and was exceptional. The service was good and Parkin gin right in the building.
Location is good, close to many restaurants and stores.
I visited Izazu and Poas and use this as our base. Other than San Jose traffic, the location was very convenient.

My family was impacted by the thousands of flight cancellations and delays across the US due to extreme cold weather and blizzards. This impacted our stay at the hotel. Immediately upon finding out our flight was cancelled, we reached out to Expedia to request to change the date of our hotel stay or refund the stay. Although we booked a refundable room, the hotel was unwilling to help us and charged us the full cost of two rooms. The hotel initially claimed that we reached out to make changes after our stay, which was a blatant lie and I have all communication to prove it. Then after being caught in a lie, they changed their story and wouldn’t help because of their cancellation policy, which didn’t make sense either because we were open to moving the date of the stay to when our flights were rescheduled for. All in all we had a terrible experience with this hotel. Their customer service is awful and I wouldn’t recommend staying here.

Well me and my family got there thursday it was raining outside so they did not have the room i pay for. The gave me a horrible small room and the add a small bed to make it work cause we have no where else to stay cause it was late and raining my mom is having knee problems so we had to take the small terreble room the front desk guy he lie saying we ganna give u a better room never happend so huge no happy for me and my family🙁

This was probably once a wonderful hotel that may have lost its luster over the past few years. Firstly, our mistake to travel here during high commute hours as it is located what appears to be the hustling and bustling city center of San Jose and the streets are one-way so we were stuck in traffic. The parking garage is locked with valet parking which felt safe. The room was at a basic cleanliness but felt old and had the musty smell. The attached hotel shops were permanently closed. We left the hotel at night for a drive and upon returning, the streets had a escorts wandering on the corners. I would not recommend this place for families with children.
