Old Hall Hotel

We were really happy with our recent 3-night stay. We booked a family room for two people - we prefer to have two beds when jet lagged & our room was a perfect set up for us (could either be a king or two twins, plus a sofa bed). Our room was spacious and bright and we were actually pleasantly surprised at how roomy the bathroom was, which had a small tub good enough for a soak. This is a quaint, old historical building which means you can expect creaky stairs and floorboards; we travel with a noise machine so zero noise issues for us when sleeping. We had no issues taking our luggage in the elevator, although we lucked out when bringing them down - the service guy was just about to start working on it. Excellent location for everything you need in Buxton; we walked around the park and through the downtown most days. Great choices of restaurants around. We were not impressed with the buffet breakfast, it was very expensive for the low quality and minimal selection, so advise to try a local well-reviewed place instead. The bar area and quaint front room for afternoon tea looked more inviting, however. Staff were all fantastic and made our stay all that more enjoyable. We will defo choose Old Hall Hotel again when we next visit this part of UK!

The Old Hall has suffered terribly since its sale to a big hotel chain a few years ago. Problems with getting and keeping experienced staff, and the loss of the stability of a local family based management team, have left The Old Hall as a shell of its former self and it is now the poor cousin of its sister hotel,The Crescent, next door. Room requests are ignored (I booked a Double bedroom and requested a room away from the noise at the front and got a twin bedded room over the front door! This, despite booking several months earlier). On checking into the room there was litter under the dressing table and in the morning the breakfast was worthy of a motorway service station. Such a shame as this used to be such a good hotel.

Although this property is the oldest in England as far as hotels go, that's also what makes it so special! The rooms are very clean and the staff very friendly and accommodating. I think that the Old Hall is still recovering from the recent covid assailment. All of the staff were as helpful and as friendly as they could have been. But there is a marked lack of training and knowledge amongst the junior staff, however hopelessly and enthusiastically they try to please. That's what puppies are for. It is not my job to inform the waiter that, upon checking our lunch bill, he has failed to add the £28 for the bottle of overpriced and poorly served wine. But, I did! This is a management problem, a training problem that the senior management need to address. My wife walked over to Crescent and felt that you had the same problem there. These issues need to be addressed if you are to recover. The Old Hall is a wonderfully quaint building but you need to up the ante. Quaint doesn't cut it in the present business environment. Are you overstretched because of the demands of The Crescent? Needs thinking about at board level I would say, or are the kind of hospitality company that plays blind man's buff or bluff? Nice hotel with nice food and friendly and very helpful staff. Our family room was the very top of the building and was very hot and uncomfortable. That being said, I would recommend people to stay here if visiting Buxton.

The hotel wasn’t clean , our room was awful and smelly . The cooked breakfast was the worst we have ever had in a hotel . The staff were polite but the overall organisation of the staff was a shambles . Young kids who were doing their best with little knowledge of the hospitality industry. The young man behind the bar didn’t even know what Brandy was really !!! This really was the real life “ fawlty towers “ stay away and £143 for one night it was just not good enough . Very very poor
