A wonderful peaceful break...there were no kids at the hotel last week !!! Hotel service and hospitality is first class, nothing too much trouble. Didn't dine in the main restaurant as we felt it was overpriced. Breakfast spread is more than adequate, and sets you up nicely for the day. The Adega restaurant in the lower gardens serves local dishes of good quality and has a good atmosphere, the bar attached to the Adega is across the road, but has fantastic views down to the coast and is a great place for pre dinner drinks as the sun goes down, which locals use as well. You will find a couple of decent restaurants a short walk away in Estreito de Camara de Lobos as well, but not much else. A car to explore the island is essential, just pluck up the courage to take on the mountain roads and you will be well rewarded. Hotel is easy to find despite rumours to the contrary, although admittedly we did arrive in daylight.Room quality is fine, air con works well but no tea or coffee facilities, and no fridge. Bit of a pain.Third floor rooms have the best views. Hotel courtesy bus runs down to Funchal daily at set times, but last bus back is 3.30pm unless you use local bus or taxi. Our first visit to Madeira, we will definitely return.

Lovely quiet hotel which offers excellent service, good value and breathtaking views. Very cleverly designed to allow disabled access. Beautiful gardens, (although these wouldn't be suitable for a wheelchair because of slopes and steps.) Great if you want a break somewhere without many kids running around - there weren't any the week we were there. However, it is some way from Funchal, and there's not a lot of places to go directly outside the hotel grounds. However, the hotel does run regular free mini-buses into Funchal and to its sister hotels. Only real improvement I'd suggest would be a fridge in the rooms. The "mini-bar" is just a room-temperature selection of drinks on a tray.
