Starhotels Excelsior

We stayed here at the beginning of August - booked direct with the property, had a great room, and excellent air con. Super location. This booking 16 days later was with Expedia…. The room was totally different. Boiling hot in 35 degree Bologna heat. Air con was weak, verging on non existent, and at this point we were very used to the med heat. The room was set up for 2 - not a family. Towels for 2 in the bathroom. Sofa bed not set up. At 7pm we had to ask for the bed to be prepared for the children. The bed was taken out and the pillows taken off the main bed for it - on arrival the main bed had 4 pillows, and at bedtime we were down to 2. Our first stay there had been 2 pillows on the children’s bed and 4 on the main bed…. It just felt like the effort was not there for this stay and it fell below the standards we’d experienced not long before when we were pleased with the experience. Such a shame.

Location was great 👍 Rooms were big & spacious. Could have more on food & drinks menu, no kids menu. Hotel staff was very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed our stay.

5 night trip for myself, wife and family of 4. Excellent location which chosen for close proximity to the railway station (few minutes walk) as we wished to make a return visit to Florence whilst there. Express train took about 38 minutes reaching a speed of 250km/hr. Hotel about 15/20 minutes walk into main Piazza. Covered porticos all the way so protected from the elements. Hotel very clean and very friendly staff at check-in. Rooms immaculately serviced and fresh sheets/towels etc. Coffee making machine in room and found a number of English speaking channels on the Sky TV. We only had breakfast once and it contained all that one would wish for (hot and cold selection). There are a number of sandwich bars and restaurants close to the hotel as well so well located for variety. Would recommned Il Veliero as we ate there twice during our stay. Would also recommend visit to San Luca monastery! All in all I would thoroughly recommend this hotel. Bologna is a virtual hidden Italian gem in our opinion!!
