The Sunstar is a great hotel for visiting Grindelwald as it has amazing views, friendly staff, and a great breakfast (the location is pretty good, too). The room we had was Mountain View and our balcony let us just sit an be in awe of the Alps. They also have rooms with a view of the town—those would be okay, but the streets have lots of pedestrians and might be less enjoyable for those who like privacy. The pool is good but has limited hours, closing at 8:00. The staff were always friendly (our kiddo got a welcome gift) and helpful. Location-wise, know that you want to go to the end of the train line, Grindelwald, not Grindelwald Terminal, to get here most easily. From there, it’s about a 7 to 10 minute walk (depending on your speed on hills). They have a shuttle, but we always walked.

This place is so peaceful and beautiful. My family stayed here for two days and was very happy. I want to go again to this place where everything is perfect.

Room slept 4 although 2 were on a sofa bed which was uncomfortable with springs that sagged atrociously. Other than that, the hotel was excellent with stunning views of the Eiger from the balcony. Swimming pool, gym and steam room were daily rituals that we indulged in. Breakfast each morning was bountiful although tables outside were rarely set up. Not a problem but for a 4* hotel, staff should have been more on top of things. Mini fridge and coffee machine in the room were kept stocked up and included in the cost of the room which was a very nice touch. Bathroom had no extraction fan or locks but again it wasn't a major issue, just a small irk when someone else used the toilet. Food at the Adlerstube hotel restaurant was good and slightly better than other restaurants in the area (best was Barry's for us). Average meal for family of 4 was 200 CHF (drinks, starter and main each). Have to say though, you don't come to Switzerland for the choice of cuisine. Wished we could have tried the fondue but for the price per person and minimum 2 people, we weren't prepared to fork out ~70 CHF to try. Same with the Tomahawk steak... would have loved to try it but at 85 CHF pp and minimum 2 people to order, it was over our budget. Location was directly opposite Grindelwald First which was a bonus. Finally a star mention to Adrian the chef and Ivonne whose hospitality and welcome lifted our stay. Will stay here again for sure.
