We had a junior suite which is a very large room - almost like a flat. But what makes it stand out is the balcony with an amazing view across Vieux Port towards the Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde. It is in the best area in Marseille and is convenient for everything. Friendly staff, large comfortable beds. Junior suites have both a bath and a separate shower and the toilet is in a separate room. Overall I highly recommend this hotel

If you weren't aware, French hotel star ratings aren't the same as international hotel ratings. The Hôtel la Résidence du Vieux Port is a 5 out of 20 star hotel--a decent 3-star on a good day. The hotel sits at a busy area within Marseille, which is not too noisy, and a stones throw away from the restaurants just across the port. Subway and bus transporation are conveniently located nearby, and so the hotel is in a prime location. The aesthetics of the hotel are that of a child on an acid trip with a crayon. It's cute if you like red, and what feels like carpet throughout. The hotel feels perpetually damp, and the rooms smell musky, but decently well kept. Housekeeping welcomes you with a straw fedora on your bed when you walk-in, and the other perks are a coffee machine, a TV that doesn't work, and a clogged shower. Nothing really to scream about--its a ragged 3-star hotel. If you expect 5-star then you should expect disappointment. I am rather besmirched by the fact that I booked the hotel through Expedia but mistakenly booked the wrong dates. I called the hotel immediately afterwards to make the change, and they weren't willing to refund me, or allow early checkout. They easily could have re-booked with the Rugby World Cup was going on that week, but the front desk wouldn't budge. Both this hotel, and Expedia, lost my respect and my business. Neither were helpful, and neither worth visiting again.

If you want a hotel with a great view and close to night life (literally all night) then this one is for you. We (2 kids and 2 adults) drove in late and had a really bad time finding the entrance to the hotel. It turns out the road in front of the hotel is blocked and you have to go to the back. Parking on the back street is not allowed. So good luck with unloading. It would have been nice to know when I contacted the hotel about parking. The room was ok. Bathroom not very clean. Everyone in that area smokes and you smell it a bit even in the room. It comes from outside. Opening the window was a bad idea. On the positive side the staff was very nice and professional. The old port area is quite charming.
