The staff, the family that owns the property, were excellent. There is just no other place to stay, unless you want to get ripped off at a boutique chain hotel. Affordable and convenient to everything, especially the Quito landmarks!

The room was really comfortable, clean and quiet and we even got a heater. Also hot water in the shower. The location is near historic center and Basilica. The family who runs the hotel is super nice and helpful. We highly recommend this place!

Owner was very friendly and was willing to help out when he was around. He sometimes was hard to find as he would have to run between different hostels they run or run the tours they provide to guests. Each day we were there the bathrooms ran out of toilet paper and we couldn't find anyone to replace it and would have to wait for the family to return in the evening to refill. Room was large and spacious with 3 beds in our accommodation (double/twin bunk and a single twin) and a desk/chair which was nice to have in the room. Our door didn't lock, but the hotel was safe and the owners offered us a locker just outside our room to lock our valuables. The shared bathroom was clean, however the hot water was a little annoying - it runs on an electric shower head heater, but if you turned the water up for pressure the heater couldn't keep up with the amount of water so it was either cold or a low pressure shower with warm water. The owner did mention they are currently renovating and building out new bathrooms (there will be more than 1 shared now) and a new larger kitchen. Neighborhood was safe and quiet, but not too much nearby. There were a few restaurants a couple blocks away and bodegas on several of the corners. Downtown sites were 15 walking down hill or a $2-3 USD taxi ride.

It could have been a bad start, but the family who runs BDH made it right and did so quickly. The room we reserved was taken, so we were somewhat disappointed. However the owner responded immediately and gave us a different room. Pluses: we did get a room. We got it immediately within minutes on a national holiday and at 9am (a very early check-in). We made it to our 10 am walking tour (also pre booked). Later we sat in the open courtyard where guests shared wine, tea, banana bread, eggplant lasagna, and good conversation. One guest was a BBC reporter. Guests were from Canada, South Africa, USA, Russia so indeed a very eclectic mix. Just up the street from the basilica which is visible from all of Quito. Very quiet. Felt very safe. We recommend BDH.
